In today's economic climate, job interviews are more competitive than ever before in recent history.
How Will You Rise Above the Competition?
Interviewing like you've always done won't necessarily cut it today. Interviewers are looking for the cream of the crop – and they have that luxury because there are more people looking for jobs today than there are jobs to be filled.
To win jobs in today's economy, you must stand out from the countless others who will sit across the table from the interviewer…
FACT: Job Interviewers WILL Evaluate
Your Vocabulary During Your Interview
Will Your Vocabulary Hurt or Help You?
Human resource professionals and job interview experts agree that a poor vocabulary when answering job interview questions will almost always cost you a job opportunity.
Like it or not, people with poor vocabularies are generally thought to be less capable and less intelligent than those with the vocabulary of a leader.
People, particularly interviewers, judge us by our vocabularies – both consciously and subconsciously. What does your vocabulary reveal about you?
Experts Agree that You Will Be Judged by Your Vocabulary
"I think (vocabulary) is one of the major reasons why an individual gets hired or not." "Very often, clients will ask us to qualify people on their ability to communicate verbally. A candidates' vocabulary is one of the ways we measure their communication skills."
- Tom Defillipo, a 20-year veteran of a recruiting business that places IT candidates.
In my role as Director of Human resources, it’s my job to send only the top, most qualified candidates to interview with Executive Management. I listen carefully to the words each candidate uses during their interview to determine if they are qualified. I won’t send a candidate to interview with Executive Management unless I feel they have the verbal skills to match their position.
- Dan Morris, Director of Human Resources Real Estate Company
How You Study Vocabulary to Prepare for Your
Interview will Greatly Impact Your Results
It’s a fact – during your job interview you will be judged by the caliber of your vocabulary. How will you ensure that your vocabulary helps you rise above the competition and win the job you are seeking? And where do you start with job interview prep…and what words do you study?
You could start with a dictionary. But, reading through a dictionary isn't a practical way to increase your vocabulary. There are just too many words to study and retain. The one thing you do NOT want to do is start memorizing a bunch of pretentious, highbrow words – that will just make you look silly!
Your goal at your job interview isn't to seem over-educated or pretentious, your goal is to use words that indicate that you are a leader, a problem-solver, and can rise to the challenges of the position you are interviewing for.
But There IS A Catch... It Only Works If You Learn the Right Vocabulary Words to Use in Your Interview
You want to use Power Words during your interview. Why Power Words? Because Power Words are words that successful leaders wield to clearly and succinctly articulate their ideas. Power Words are much more than just "words" – they reflect the way that you approach life, handle problems, and lead people.
Just look at the difference in these two job interview responses. Both interview candidates “think” they are saying the same thing , but what they reveal about themselves with their word choices is dramatically different…
Weak Interview Response:
- "My boss really liked the employee rewards program that I came up with for our department."
Power Words Interview Response:
- “By implementing an employee rewards program, I was able to bolster morale and productivity in my department.”
Through his word choices, job interview candidate #1 draws attention to himself rather than the results of his accomplishments. He unknowingly reveals that he is a "pleaser" rather than a leader interested in results or his team.
However, by using Power Words and Power Talking, job interview candidate #2 indicates that she was more focused on the results the company and her department gained as a result of her actions.
Power Words are ACTION WORDS. Words that denote that you are a leader, that you take responsibility for your actions, and that you are a focused more on results than self gain – all of the qualities that job interviewers are looking for in a candidate.

I wanted to let you know that ...
I wanted to let you know that I just received a job offer…I also have a funny story for you. During the interview I used the Power Word “assimilate.” When I used this word, the woman interviewing me said; “wow, nice use of the word assimilate. I like that word.” In this tough economy and competitive job market, it’s the little things that can make the difference. I think my use of the word “assimilate” was one of those little things that helped set me apart during my interview. Thank You!
